9325 empty grain from Inner Habour was a good ticket south last Saturday (4th Feb). I followed it from Goulburn to Wallenbean. This post has a few portrait shots. The next post will have some of the 'nicer' photos.

The consist was entirely NGKF and NGPF with a long VHAF 604 in the guts. Pretty nice to get a clean green C onteh front!!

Qube - SQDY

100 new SQDY wagons arrived from the US a few weeks back. They were built by ARI for NREC, and are owned by Qube. The wagons are roughly 45ft skeletal type.

RRDY 110 - AK Test Wagon

G'day! It's been a few very busy weeks but I have some shots to share from recent adventures. Over the next few days I'll post some shots from last week when I was travelling around southern NSW and Victoria. I'm in Western NSW early this week so will hopefully have some shots when I return.

Photoed in Goulburn was RRDY 110 with the PN test container. This wagon occasionally gets attached to the AK cars for PN to carry out testing.

Some shots from the CEY testing out west last week. There will be some shots in ARI Magazine and Motive Power as well.

CEY 001, 002 and 003 push back into Lidsdale Siding to load the train.

Recovery loco CEY 005 stabled in Lithgow Yard - still in undercoat.

A nice PN coal combo rolls through Marrangaroo, infront of the CEY test train.

The Gold train was headed for Port Kembla.

Relatively new PHTH Rake 62. All 76 rakes have now been delivered.

8 repainted ARTC NDFF wagons were stabled at Carrington on 7/1/2012. Shame they have been tagged already.

Interestingly the wagons have been recoded to ADFF yet that code is not currently recognised by ARTC in the form of the TOC Waiver. Hope they don't go too far!!

They also have a daggy NDPF van - about time that got a repaint too!

GWA 005 on NY3 - 16/12/2011

Despite the continuing rubbish weather in the Highlands, I heasded out for a shot of GWA005 on delivery transfer to SA.

GWA005 as fourth unit on NY3, nose to nose with NR109.

A shabby NR64 with a star panel on the rear baffle.

A rebuilt RKWY - possibly from the Spencer Junction prang a few years back.

4-pack of Chinese built NHDH coal hoppers.

Refurbished NHVF. The old SRA bogie colour doesn't do it justice (nor do the tags!).

Some overhead shots of the Qube SQDY wagons (In the shade of the XGAYs).

A rake of former ATN XGAYS back in grain service with PN. Now just over 10 years old, these hoppers have always had a nice shape to them.

5NY3 - 1st December

A few Blogs coming up over the next couple of days.

NR94 leads NR57 on 5NY3 through Aylmerton on 01/12/2011. I don't think the sun has been out since!! Note the inline fuel hose support loop on the nose, above the ditch light.

RailCorp's two NDZFs (40051 and 40052) were heading back to Bluebird Workshops SA for twistlock outriggers to be added. These wagons normally carry track panels.

There was a notable amount of small coils on the train. Half were loaded into RCSFs, and the others were loaded into normal jumbo coil wagons as can be seen below. Above is RCSF 79 in an early NRC livery.

RCSF 89 still in V/Line!

RCKF 51 with all three cradles loaded - it is very uncommon to see all three cradles loaded!

RCQF 20872 with the smallest coils I have ever seen loaded into this type of wagon.

Pipe wagon RKTF 3025. Note the additional doors in the middle of the wagon - whch was a retro fit latger in life.

New wheels from Maintrain or Comsteel loaded on RZXY 2181. The new wheels are painted in a special heat indicating paint (glossy grey) so that overheated wheels can be easily identified.

Not the best of photos, but something I haven't noted before - The bogie on the right (RKKY) is fitted with steering arms which is evident from the brackets to the left and right of the spring nest. This is a retro fit to older type bogies.

Being the 1st of December, I didn't want this month to turn out like November - a total of 2 posts!! November has been very busy for me but alas not much photography, partly due to the high sun during the middle of the day.

I was in Chullora for work a few weeks back and grabbed these shots.

LVR 4701 - keep an eye on this unit - it is about to be repainted!!

Xstrata have taken delivery of some 2-packs also - coded PHWH. Note that they are the same design as the Whitehaven 2-packs.

PNQ Coal Fleet

A few photos of the various hoppers in the PNQ coal fleet.

PNQ exclusively run ECP braking, where as QR are still operating pnuamatic braking coal trains.

All the photos were taken around the Auckland Point area at Gladstone.

The original PNQ coal hopper design - NHAH from Bradken.

The prototype NHCH 2-pack from FreightCar Americaa in a consortium with EDI.

New NHGH hoppers built by CSR Yangtze. The highest numbered pair was a rake in the 200 series.

Just over the road is a stack of NHGHs ready to be put on rail.

PN 83 Class Chassis

Sighted at Goondiwindi QLD earlier this week was the chassis for a Downer EDI built PN 83 class loco.

The frames are build in Port Augusta SA and trucked to Maryborough QLD for completion.

Completed 8329 was photoed at the workshop last week.

A narrow gauge Aligned bogie. Never knew QR had these!

First of a bunch from QLD

Over the next few weeks I'll be posting some QLD shots taken over a 4 day period between 15 and 19 October. With a mate, we covered about 4000km in 5 days, and travelled as far north as Bowen, as far west as Emerald, and covered as much of the four QLD coal networks as possible - plus a little bit of cane.

Day 1 was travelling from the Sunshine Coast to Rockhampton.

Recently built 4160 (and 4159) sit at Rocky depot. They had gone in the morning (up to Pring on the Newlands Coal Network).

Stored 3900 class at Gladstone.

Brand new 8329 at EI Maryborough facility. Also in the shed was new QRN loco 4165.

Passenger set 243 at EDI also.

An RKDF with a rather unique door. This wagon has been getting around for a few years now. I pressume the cut out sections at the top allow a forklift to lift the section out.

QQCY Pick Up

The last 5 QQCY wagons were picked up today from Bradken at Braemar/Mittagong. A pair of orange bulldogs (12/7) did the honours.

Working through Mittagong Jucntion, off the branch and onto the Down Main.

Love the nose!

The rear of the train is now just clear of the junction and the head end of the train is just past the old Maltings.

The sound of an 81 had me worried but thankfully...a perfect cross!

A few interesting containers on MB7 late last week.

In the consist was about 6 of these 20ft 1.83m high 'tub' containers. Not too sure what they are for, but may be an ore or mineral type container headed to QLD.

TRAY Wagons on QRN Services

Starting October 1st 2011, all 6 TRAY wagons (1001-1006) owned by CEVA (formerly TNT Autocare) have been transferred from PN operations to QR operations. It is unknown if CEVA still own the wagons or have sold them to QRN.

Today's 3MB7 service through Aylmerton had TRAY 1001 mid consist, carrying a single 48ft container HBT301 (TNT container).

A few interesting wagons on NY3 a couple of weeks back.

Very unusual, the train had both EDI loco chassis carriers together - the RQRX and NQEX.

RQIY 10163 with a pair of half heights. These containers have been mated with this wagon for some time now. Check out my photo from March 2010.

RCSF 90 fitted with an old school Barber bogie. A close up can be found here.

An RKDF with a fresh yellow side sill, running slightly higher across the doors.

I love double stacks! They have always attracted me to South Australia - especially National Rail/PN service MP5/PM5.

Australian companies certain embrace brightly coloured containers when compared to the 'Yanks'. This aspect makes for a rainbow of colours especially when containers are freshly painted.

A few people have contacted me about posting some mid 2000 double stack photos, so here are three posts all from March 2006, taken just north of Adelaide in the Two Wells area.

A late running MB4 with a colourful combo through Mittagong.

The lighting was a bit head on, but I didn't have time to move down towards the station.

A repainted Brambles Shipping reefer. This box would be over 10 years old.

Looks like ANL have been buying up second hand shipping reefers from all different shipping lines (note that each container is different). The one with the orange reefer is probably ex Hamburg Sud. Those who like a bit of detective work can probably work out the former owners based on the container numbers.

Single 8123 was upfront. Note the PacNat sticker near the porthole window. I recall these were fitted by Temora or Coota depot staff.

The only NPEF to carry PN logos - 82003.

RCSF 30 with a white top rail, and yellow bottom section.

Recently built tilt bed RKVY 8005.

Fresh yellow side sills highlight the length of monster plate wagon RKXF 60116.

A very pleasing jumbo flat - RQNW 60020. The wagon was originally painted all blue after derailment repairs a few years back and has copped the yellow side sill as part of the PN program.

Unique Newcastle Opens

A few favourites sighted during my seemingly endless journeys to Newcastle, but I can't complain about the chance to go snapping! All four photos are taken at Morandoo and are of RKCX or RKCY type opens whiuch have the centre section removed for loading or unloading with a large forklift (as I recall in Brisbane).

RKCX 4004 on 06/09/2011 - shame RRLX 66 got in the way!

One of only two RKCY wagons, 20534, photoed on 06/09/2011.

A week later on 13/09/2011 found RKCX 4 complete with sliced VLine logo board.

The other RKCY, 20282 on 10/09/2011 also.

I haven't seen these on the east coast before - a 48ft SCFU RAIL CONTAINERS container. Note the dat panel with 3.0m in normal and mirrored text.

What once was a nice paint job has been butchered by PN. 8114 in a average patch job.

Cartainer AB062. I haven't been following these too closely, but this looks to be from a second batch as it hasn't faded as much as the one on the left. The one to the right is AB050. I recall the first build of AB container may have been 1-36 or around that figure.

AFGF 1627 ready for BG operation with POTA. This was was built by Wiles in 1961.

SG V/Line pass job.

The CQCY wagons are being converted to BG operations for Metro spoil work.

A favourite of mine - PCJ 493 - former West Coast PCO2.

Decked VLCX 38 - making a good shed.

Steamrail painted VOBX 244. For the number crunchers, be aware that this is not originally ELX 244.

VOBX 289 - I believe the owner may be El Zorro.

VPFX 16, still in reasonable condition.

Bundled copper loaded into RCDX 12. Note the recent addition of the semi permanent cradles at each end. These look to be wleded into position.

No less than four RKPF wagons were on XW4 a few weeks ago. Here are some photos that provide a good current day contrast.

Of particular interest is the handbrake wheel styles, the lashing bars and the chain boxes. The mesh deck varies on them as well.

High Cube FCL

Something rather unusual on PS6 a few weeks back - a rake of about 10 FCL 3.2m high (10'6") containers. They were loaded onto a low level RRYY and also into a 5-pack well wagon.

The Old Steel Girls

RKEX 2, with it's unique side walls and a fresh yellow side sill.

Looking very similar to decades ago, RKEX 29 is an original ESX with four end ribs on the bulkhead.

ROOX 2954 with an Australian National Railways logo board. Not much has changed on this wagon over 30 years.

Some interesting loads on NP3 last Monday. These photos were taken at Moss Vale. If on the earlier path, NP3/NY3 is often put away for the Down Canberra Pass to overtake.

Side door containers on NQOY 14914. NQOY wagons are becoming more common on PN Intermodal/Steelink jobs.

RQMF 4305 - now an 80km/h runner, with 110km/h stencilled - probably from when it was an AQSY or similar!

A favourite of mine - Now looking like more of a rainbow with the PN stripe on the side sill. V/Line painted out with FA green, a light blue databoard, and a PN yellow safety stripe. This will make a very nice model!

BQAY 2001 W - Friday Special

New RKVY Tilt Beds

Noted on todays XW4 steel job was brand new RKVY 8004. About 3 weeks back I noted a brand new 8001 on a PW4 service.

I believe there are 5 being built at UGL Bassendean. These are probably from the order that PN placed quite a few years ago but the job was canned due to the GFC.

Unfortunately I filled up the SD card prior to 8001 going past, and in the case below, my camera had a auto focus malfunction and as such was delayed in taking the photo! Anyway, I'm sure I'll see these again in the near future.

RKVY 8004 - Not my best shot, but a record none the less.

The motive power on the lead was a nice and grubby NR102, with a friendly Junee driver.

Steelink Variations

Two oddities from 28/7. Interestingly, one is a former NSW open wagon and the other a former VIC open wagon.

RCQF 20390 with a very detailed side sill paint job. Note the red marking above the operational equipment such as the handbrake, load comp and release lever. A white borderline also separates the red from the yellow. I suspect this was a NSW repaint?

RKMX 226 with a pair of NSW bogies (the one on the right is an XLB - National Type), and the front container has a grey lid. The lids are the same regardless of colour - it is the bases that vary.

Busy Friday

Plenty of trains and plenty of sun in the Highlands yesterday. Here are three trains (late WP2, 2134 and 8958). Still to come are PS6 and BM4.

A load of Jumbo Coils. The wagon with the skeletal deck is a RCBF.

Similar wagons but very different loads. The wagon near the top of the photo (RCDX) has been loaded with scrap steel, where as the VOFX/RKCX at the bottom has been loaded with finished steel products such as merchant bar or reo.

Plate wagon RKQF 60213.

Train 2134 with 8178. Since the Kandos cement train ceased (1721/7122), 100t gross NPHH hoppers have turned up in the Highlands. This train had about 10 up front.

From memory, the only NPHH with PN logos is NPHH 82116.

The first of the QQCY 5-pack wagons delivered by Bradken for QR. Here is QQCY 1101 fitted with dynamic test equipment ready for high speed testing this week.

The wagon is similar in design and style to the NRC built RQQY wagons.

XW4 - 9th July 2011

A varied selection of Steelink Wagons from XW4 a few weeks back.

An original NR107 in reasonably good condition.

Former Freightcorp NQTY 20319 - Not too many on Steelink services at the moment.

Rail pair RKAX 15

An unidentified RKMX (NODY origins) with two repainted butter boxes. The boxes repainted last year were done in a light grey colour. These are more link the CIMC supplied boxes.

Dull and faded RKNX 319.

Near original with the tie bars and chain box, is RKPF 30309. The mesh deck was fitted when it was converted for plate steel, and NRC fitted the 70t bogies.

CR red RQKY 2141.

RQCX 712 with two more repainted butterboxes. Note the location of the vertical ID labels.

RQTY 620 - the half height scrap containers are becoming pretty rare on these services.

Barber Bogie?

Here is one that has stumped me. Can anyone identofy the bogie under RCSF 27? The photo was taken on 9th July 2011. I've never seen a bogie like it.

The bogie looks to be a Barber type, with extremely long horns and axle box keeps which look like pins.
